Real Sociedad leaps over Valencia into the Champions League

Even though the league title, Copa del Rey, and Champions League had already been decided weeks ago, there was still enough drama to be jam-packed into the last weekend of matches in La Liga. The contest at Riazor between Deportivo and Real Sociedad proved to be exciting down to the last minute.

Sociedad came into the match knowing they had a chance, with a win, to leapfrog Valencia who stood fourth place in the table with 65 points. Real had 63 points, meaning the necessary outcome was a win, and a definitive Valencia loss, no tie.

Deportivo was playing with a lot on the line as well, as they were seeking to avoid relegation. Four teams – Mallorca, Deportivo, Zaragoza, and Celta Vigo – were all fighting to not be named in the league table’s last three. Coming into the match with 35 points, all Deportivo needed was a win, and they would remain in the Primera Division. Continue reading Real Sociedad leaps over Valencia into the Champions League

Real Sociedad still aiming for the Champions League

Real Sociedad kept their Champions League hopes alive Sunday, after scoring a goal in the dying moments of the contest to draw 3-3 with Read Madrid. They came into the contest tied with Valencia on points, and even though they didn’t get the result they wanted, the 1-point draw kept them within two points and striking distance of still qualifying for the Champions League next season.

There was no absence of scoring, for sure, as Gonzalo Higuain got Los Blancos off to an early start after forcing a turnover at the back. José Callejón wouldn’t follow him up until 12 minutes into the second half, successfully finishing a one-on-one with the keeper. Real Sociedad and Granada draw 2-2

sociedad-granadaReal Sociedad came into Monday’s match with Granada temporarily having lost their fourth place position in the standings to Valencia. By the end of the night they would regain it, but not in the fashion they’d hoped.

The Erreala gave up a goal in the ninetieth minute of the game to Jose Recio, and Granada responded by celebrating as if they’d won the title. Red-clad players piled on top of one another at the far corner of the pitch, while La Real were left in disappointment.

Real Sociedad set themselves up for three points early on in the contest, as Imanol Agirretxe headed home a fiery free kick from Gonzalo Castro. But the lead wouldn’t last for long, as Youssef El Arabi pounded home a deflection past Claudio Bravo.

Agirretxe managed to score again right before the half, using his chest to guide in a wondrous cross from Carlos Vela. Everything seemed all but in the books until Granada keeper Roberto Alvarellos played a last minute desperation ball into the box, and after bouncing around it landed at the feet of Recio, who put it in the net.

The draw ties both Real Sociedad and Valencia at 59 points, but La Real hold onto 4th place with the tiebreaker. Granada remains in 16th place with 36.
