Cristiano Ronaldo is becoming fed up with constantly being compared with Barcelona ace Lionel Messi and insists it’s not just a race between those two players to win the Ballon d’Or.
The two formidable La Liga stars are considered by the majority of the football world to be the only two players in contention for the prestigious award, due to their almost flawless performances for Real Madrid and Barcelona every single week.
Both Ronaldo and Messi are on the 23-player shortlist for the award that was decided by experts from France Football magazine and the FIFA football committee.
Former Manchester United favourite Ronaldo was asked who he thought would win the Ballon d’Or this year and claimed it could be any number of players.
“(The rivalry) is a question of the media,” said Ronaldo.
“We constantly face it to sell more papers and improve television audiences.
“The truth is I’m a little tired of it. It’s a little heavy but I’m used to it. I don’t like to compare myself with others.
“Messi and I are different, that’s for sure. I respect him a lot.
“Messi can win (the Balon d’Or) but so can Xavi or Iniesta. And we cannot forget (Didier) Drogba or Falcao. They can also receive the trophy.”
The award is voted for by international managers and captains and selected journalists, and the winner will be announced on January 7.
