Real Sociedad kept their Champions League hopes alive Sunday, after scoring a goal in the dying moments of the contest to draw 3-3 with Read Madrid. They came into the contest tied with Valencia on points, and even though they didn’t get the result they wanted, the 1-point draw kept them within two points and striking distance of still qualifying for the Champions League next season.
There was no absence of scoring, for sure, as Gonzalo Higuain got Los Blancos off to an early start after forcing a turnover at the back. José Callejón wouldn’t follow him up until 12 minutes into the second half, successfully finishing a one-on-one with the keeper.
Xabi Prieto would respond for Real by finishing a penalty in the 64th due to a Khedira handball. Antoine Griezmann almost brought Sociedad level six minutes later after misfiring, but was able to finish a Carlos Martinez cross in the 78th.
Two minutes later Mesut Ozil and Khedira would team up to break the tie, and things looked bleak for Real. But in the last minute of stoppage time, Prieto was able to score a prayer of a goal to keep Real Sociedad in the Champions League race.
Real goes into their last match with Deportivo needing a win and some help from Valencia, who they are hoping will lose against Sevilla on Saturday.
