Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Malaga are all sitting pretty near the top of La Liga, chasing league leaders Barcelona and waiting for them to slip up.
But the trio of teams all shift their focus to the Copa del Rey tonight as they look to join Barcelona in the next round of the cup.
Real Madrid are away to minnows Alcoyano and will be more than confident of a result. It will be interesting to see which team Real boss Jose Mourinho decides to field, as his priorities may be with resting his star players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, for La Liga matches instead.
Atletico Madrid face Jaen in what should be an easy path to the next round, but the beauty of cup competitions is that they are unpredictable and small teams play with courage as they have nothing to lose. Atletico should have enough quality to overpower tonight’s opposition, but they must try hard not to suffer from being too complacent.
Malaga are enjoying their football in La Liga this season and currently reside in third place, ahead of the mighty Real Madrid, and indeed in the Champions league where they sit atop the table after winning all three of their games so far. Tonight they face another winnable cup fixture, this time against Cecereno.
