Barcelona carried on their imperious form with a 5-0 demolition of Rayo Vallecano. Cesc Fàbregas broke up the Vallecano defence in the 20th minute, playing though David Villa who got on the end of the cross and scored an impressive goal, defeating the goalkeeper Rubén with a solitary touch.
Rayo had positioned its attack bravely, with the intention on rattling the supposed uncertainty of Busquets and Adriano, who have been re-positioned as central defenders following Barca’s defensive injury crisis. Villa’s strike, however, wiped out their plans.
With the score 0-1, a Barcelona team missing Iniesta (and with Song playing in Busquets’ regular position) was incapable of making their dominance count further before the interval, as Rayo tried to unsettle the La Liga leaders with their display of character and commitment.
But the way things are going for Tito Vilanova’s men this season, it wasn’t going to be long before they started to pull away. Martin Montoya pulled the ball back and placed it perfectly at the lethal feet of Leo Messi, who rifled in his 300th career goal at the age of just 25.
Xavi made the game secure to make it 0-3 in the 78th minute when he converted a pass by Jordi Alba, and then Cesc Fàbregas scored the fourth a minute afterwards to ensure the Catalans could enjoy themselves for the remainder of the match.
This allowed their fifth and final goal of the match to be slotted home by none other than the unstoppable Messi, with the footballing legend rounding off a solid performance in the 89th minute.
