Cristiano Ronaldo has been forced to withdraw from the Portugal squad that play Gabon tonight.

Ronaldo suffered a horrific blow to the face whilst playing for Real Madrid against Levante on Sunday and has been declared unfit to play by the team doctors at Portugal.

The 27-year-old former Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United attacker was accidentally elbowed in the face by David Navarro after just 3 minutes of play in the 2-1 victory at Levante, but he did manage to carry on playing and even scored the opening goal for Jose Mourinho’s men.

But Ronaldo was substituted at half-time to prevent any further damage to his face injury, with the upcoming fixtures coming thick and fast.

Key players Joao Pereira, the Valencia defender, and Miguel Veloso of Dynamo Kiev are also ruled out of the international meeting in Libreville.

As a result of his growing injury list, coach Paulo Bento has called up Maritimo player Ruben Ferreira and Braga’s Hugo Viana to the squad who travel to Gabon.
