Jose Mourinho is leaving Real Madrid after this last match with much controversy, so it was only right that he came into the contest against Osasuna with much controversy. His squabbles with Iker Casillas were well documented, so even though the keeper had recovered from his injury, he was left out of the lineup in place of Jesus Fernandez.
Los Blancos fans were very much divided, as one contingent jeered and whistled as Mou’s name was announced over the speakers, while the other stood in support for him. It was almost as if the result of the match was not important.
Even though Madrid was able to pull out the win, the players showcased a lack of emotion as many of them have also been torn by turmoil surrounding Mourinho. Higuain opened up the scoring for Madrid in the 34th minute, making it his 121st goal in a Real Madrid jersey, tying him all-time with Juanito.
However, the goal could likely be Higuain’s last with the team, and he acted as much, declining to celebrate at all after scoring. Essien scored, but Osasuna were able to draw level, and Ozil and Callejon finished off the 4-2 score.
Mourinho endured a mix of emotions throughout the game, as he refused to enter the dugout until the game had just begun. He was immediately engulfed by photographers, so much so that the referees had to intervene.
