Spanish football has been enjoying an incredible run for some time. Teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona have shined on a global stage while sporting the world’s greatest players, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to begin. Spain took the 2012 Euro Cup in dominating fashion, topping off a streak of major tournament championships including the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 Euros.
But despite all of this success, a glaring reality is now beginning to set in after the recent Champions League thrashings suffered by both Barcelona and Real Madrid. German football has showed that they may just be better.
Bayern Munich smashed Barca in the first leg 4-0, and we may have all taken it as a farse. When Real Madrid were thumped 4-1 by German club Borussia Dortmund, we could have thought the same. After all, the same celebration and discussion took place after a game AC Milan team beat Barca 2-0 in their first Champions League leg. But the football world realigned itself after Barcelona responded with a 4-0 2nd leg to win 4-2 on aggregate.
However after Barca and Madrid weren’t able to recover in the 2nd leg against Dortmund and Bayern, we must come to realize that a changing of the guard has taken place. Players like Robert Lewandowski and Mario Mandzukic are leading German teams into a new era, even though many fans are struggling to realize this.
Barca are facing a tough summer despite winning La Liga, as they sort out transfers and deal with frustrating injuries. La Real are in a similar situation, as turmoil has swirled around them with the supposed exit of manager Jose Mourinho.
