Espanyol have parted ways with coach Mauricio Pochettino and sporting director Ramon Planes as a consequence of the clubs poor run of form that sees them propping up the La Liga table.
The final straw for Pochettino was Sunday’s home loss to Getafe where Espanyol couldn’t muster much of a performance and were defeated 2-0.
The latest defeat leaves the struggling La Liga side bottom of the league, with a dismal nine points from 13 matches and only two wins.
The club’s official website have released a statement, explaining how the coach and director Planes had parted ways with the club after careful consideration by the board.
“This afternoon, the club and the coach agreed to terminate by mutual consent the contract that united them,” it read.
“Ramon Planes has ceased his duties as sporting director of the club, having also reached an agreement for termination by mutual agreement.
“RCD Espanyol wishes to publicly thank the dedication and commitment of both professionals during their time with the club and wish them every success, both personally and professionally.”
Rumours in Spain hint that Marcelinho Garcia Toral may be the favourite to take the reigns and is high up in Espanyol’s thoughts.
The 47-year-old has been manager at a host of Spanish clubs, including Recreativo Huelva, Racing Santander, Real Zaragoza and Sevilla.
