Real Betis are still on course for a top-four finish in La liga after they scored a late goal to claim all three points in a 1-0 win away to Celta Vigo on Monday night.
It was Celta who came closest to scoring in the first half of the match when Iago Aspas fired just wide, but Betis fought back and looked a stronger side after the break, and their persistence paid off when they finally breached the defense with 10 minutes remaining.
Nacho crossed the ball low into the box to the feet of Jorge Molina, who showed excellent composure and skill to turn, having had his back to goal, and coolly and accurately slot the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal past the helpless Javi Varas.
There was still time for a late Celta onslaught as the home side tried to deny Betis travelling home with all three points, but Augusto Fernandez, Gustavo Cabral and Mario Bermejo all lacked the composure in front of goal in great opportunities to equalise.
The defeat is the second in a row for Celta, who linger dangerously close to the foot of the table and are now just two points above the relegation places.
Meanwhile, in La Liga’s other Monday night fixture, Deportivo La Coruna managed to earn a point as they drew 0-0 at home to Real Valladolid, but the result leaves the club propping up the other 19 teams in the top division.
Valladolid will have been keen to come away from the match with all three points as they now have to host the unstoppable Barcelona and Lionel Messi in their next fixture on Saturday.
