Even though Barcelona are just weeks removed from capturing the league title and celebrating as champions, even then they knew their work was not done. Due to their incredible season the Blaugrana retained the enviable position of equaling the amazing 100-point record mark set by Real Madrid last year.

No one should think for one second they will not try to achieve it.

Barcelona took care of business in their latest task as they defeated Espanyol 2-0 at Cornellà-El Prat. It didn’t take long to score, as Alexis Sanchez scored in the 14th minute after an incredible display of skill, beating the blanquiazules keeper Cristian Álvarez. Barca wouldn’t score until four minutes remaining in the game, as Pedro Rodríguez finished off a beautiful one-two with Xavi and volleyed it into the back of the net.

In an interesting side note, not everyone who attended the game from Espanyol enjoyed the festivities. There was a considerable delegation of fans in blue and white who protested the Barcelona City Council’s treatment of the newly crowned champions. They stood most of the game with their back to the action, and other fans held up banners and signs that said “Catalonia is more than one club” and “Columbus didn’t discover Qatar”. The fans were clearly displaying their feelings of unequal treatment by the city to Barcelona’s less popular team.

The win by Barca puts them at 97 points in the standings, with a single league match remaining against Málaga on June 1 at Camp Nou. Espanyol finishes up the same date away at Celta Vigo.
